Many students across the country including
myself have picked business related subjects
in their higher education and subjected
to coursework and a lot of theory. This
can be beneficial because in the future
this theory can help to continue our education
but does this theory work actually help
us to succeed in today’s world of
business?
In my opinion, it does
not. Students need to be in situations in
which they can see what it is like to be
part of a business or to run their own business.
Some people may fly through the theory work
with no problem, but when it comes down
to actually going out there and doing it,
they do not have any idea where to begin.
I took part in an enterprise
challenge launched to students of President
Kennedy School and Community College in
Coventry, which allowed the participants
of the course to experience first hand what
it is like to produce a business plan, solving
any potential problems and working has teams
to achieve a common goal.
We
were given 10 days to produce a business
plan with a concept / idea, which could
actually be implemented as a business in
the future, and to launch a fully functional
website and present our business plan to
a board of judges.
The
course gave us an opportunity to get out of
school and see from first hand experience how
to meet deadlines, work in teams and groups
and how to produce a business plan and concept
and identifying flaws within this plan.
Fleur
Sexton of PET Languages organised the content
and content delivery of the entire course and
without this exceptional quality of content and
a great location for the enterprise course to
located, this course may not have been as useful
to us.
Many of us who have taken part
in the course have learnt skills which will undoubtedly
help us in the future and we have also seen what
it takes to start our own business, which some
of us may try in the future. We have obtained
skills, which we could never have dreamt of without
this course. It was truly an invigorating experience.
